A rising star in Japan, Ichiko Aoba has nestled beneath the radar in the West but that won’t last long. Her music soundtracks Zelda for Nintendo Switch as well as multiple popular theatrical productions and she has successfully connected with audiences for her (mostly) English language and dream-inspired album Windswept Adan, released in late 2020.

There’s a lot to the minimal ambient acoustic explorations and varied instrumentation all played, produced and released on the artist’s own label, Hermine. There’s a universality hinting at impressionism and jazz. There’s a beautiful storytelling informed by time spent outside of her body, as well as by Studio Gibli and Disney. Aoba plays and sings different moods, delivering a surreal and simple sound.
