BRAIDS hail from Calgary, Canada where they first made a mark with their self-released debut, Set Pieces” in 2008. Three years later, the band released Native Speaker”, and the rollercoaster ride began. The band got tremendous reviews in the it” magazines and got invited to the bigger and most interesting festivals, one of them being SXSW. A sold-out European tour also confirmed that they must be doing something right with the new wavy art rock that has the listener in awe especially during live performances. A strong leader, petite Raphaelle Standell-Preston plays shy when critics try and compare the record’s listening experience to that of the first Broken Social Scene or Arcade Fire. Blurring the lines between genres, BRAIDS is aiming at a broader audience and tries to kick in as many doors as their arms and legs allow for, from new wave to blues. PETER KERNEL is a Swiss Canadian art-punk trio consisting of Aris Bassetti (guitar, voice, graphic designer), Barbara Lehnhoff (bass, voice, filmmaker) and Ema Matis (drums). The group was founded in 2005 with a mission to reinterpret pop music in a kind of weird but sexy manner. Their first ever production was a score for an experimental musical that Barbara had directed. In 2008
The band released their first album, How To Perform A Funeral” followed by The Ticket” EP in 2009, both for their own label On the Camper Records.
Ever since, the trio has shared the stage with Wolf Parade (Sub Pop), opening for their European tour in September 2010. The hype has been increasing ever since. Five London boys who are carving a slither of a niche between tribal pop and post-Coldplay rock Formed earlier this year, ZULU WINTER has with minimum press, been hailed the best kept secret among the few enlightened roaming the blogosphere. Avoiding any classification of genre or style, the band creates custommade avant-garde pop with that contains the potential to fill arenas, making them serious contenders for festival favorites in the year or so to come. A few weeks back, ZULU WINTER released a genre bending mixtape (anything from Jacques Dutronc to Alice Coltrane) proving that they have taste and that they are not afraid. Their catchy tunes (“Silver Tongue”, Never Leave”) show that they are not afraid to become a household name, neither.
