Two British lads, James Young and Aiden Whalley met at University and decided to make music together. With James playing mainly house and techno records when DJing and Aiden being infatuated with classical and new wave, nothing good was to be expected from such dubious pairing. However they proved everybody wrong with DARKSTAR, a group that marinates its pop sensibility in a deep ocean of bass. Hailed as something of a dubstep sensation by Pitchfork after the release of their first single on Hyperdub, Need You / Squeeze My Lime” (2008), the duo has gone to drop several more singles and eventually recruit a singer, James Buttery for its first LP, entitled North”. The tone of the record is cold, minimal and infectious, somewhere between OMD, John Carpenter and Kraftwerk, with Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer” its emotional peak as well as a Radiohead favorite. Additional blessing has come this year with the band’s bold move to sign with Warp Records. SUN GLITTERS is the result of many years of sound research through different genres under the moniker Sug®cane.Sun Glitters’ sound is a wave of lush melodies, pitch-shifted vocal samples, ghostly digi-diva choirs, warm bass melodies driven by alternately dense and relaxing beatwork combinations between downtempo and wonky beats.
