World music as seen through the eyes of an L.A. indie band, that’s how you could resume the kind of music FOOL’S GOLD creates. Started as a side project in 2007 by Luke Top (vocals, bass) and Lewis Pesacov (lead guitar), FOOL’S GOLD quickly grew to become somewhat of a sensation as more and more bands began to emulate the Western pop meets Malian music aesthetic. If you can find quite a lot of references (especially on their debut album) to Congolese, Malian and South-African styles, their second effort moves the ball more in the territory of danceable indie pop. With songs sung both in Hebrew and English, the band doesn’t seem set to fix any boundaries while crafting tunes. As long as the groove is present, as long as the guitar licks keep tingling your spine and tickling your feet, Top, Pesacov and friends will continue to build on the best of both worlds. Other members of the group include Latin American pop star Erica Garcia; former drummer for THE FALL, Orpheo McCord; Michael Tapper, formerly of WE ARE SCIENTISTS, as well as several other percussionists, musicians and vocalists.
