For young Israelis, the end of mandatory military service is supposed to mark the beginning of their adult lives. For thousands, it triggers an existential crisis. Leaving Israel has long been condemned by the Israeli society. However, for an increasing number of young Israelis, leaving becomes part of growing up : most of them embark on a backpacking trip upon completing their military service. More and more Israelis are also flocking to Europe where we meet them in Berlin, the new “Mecca”, they say. Some decide to never go back because they don’t understand this struggle for Palestine anymore ; they prefer to think about their career and pursue their dreams elsewhere.
