DIIV is the nom-de-plume of Z. Cole Smith, frontman of a new Brooklyn four-piece. Signed on the reliable Captured Tracks imprint, DIIV immediately caught the eye of music lovers and tastemakers thanks to its stark New York attitude and a bunch of perfectly crafted rock tunes. A track like Sometime” evokes the spirit of the Lower East Side scene in the early eighties and the kind of nihilistic romanticism that is so appealing amongst young adults. Short after the release of the tracks Doused” and How Long Have You Known?”, the band had more and more people talking and being enthusiastic. Oshin”, the debut album is now available. LA FEMME is a young band that tries to challenge the listener into believing in French rock music sung in French. Some say it is impossible, some say the heyday of French Music is long gone. LA FEMME are young so they are ones to believe in their dreams. And so do those who had the pleasure to see them play live. They just came off an All-American tour, which in itself is a feat that many French pop outfits cannot pride themselves of. They chose Courbet’s controversial close-up painting L’Origine du Monde” as artwork for their debut EP. This of course caused a buzz that only got magnified by the excellent content contained on the record with Sur la planche” being probably the catchiest song.
