This January, music journalists around the world must have felt confused: after finishing their best of 2012, they discovered that {Awayland} might already be the 2013 album of the year.…For those following VILLAGERS since their beginnings, this certainly comes as no surprise. Two years earlier, the Irish singer-songwriter Conor O’Brien had already recorded a true masterpiece, namely his debut “Becoming a Jackal.” The album showcased Conor’s inborn visceral talent for writing captivating folk songs. The Irishman bought a synthesizer and transformed his solo project VILLAGERS into a band. {Awayland} is the fruit of this evolution. The high quality songwriting has remained, but the soundscapes are more varied, atmospheric, and experimental. The complete band that accompanies Conor as well as flirtations with electronic music just perfectly underline the different moods of his songs.
