The flipbook Tandem Running, illustrated and animated by Marie Lavis, was published by Rotondes for the Flip off exhibition.

Tandem Running, in the words of Marie Lavis

After several animation tests using the two circles that form the Rotondes logo, I decided to focus in particular on the message of my animation’s narrative. The circle is a shape that I particularly enjoy because for me it conjures up the feeling of universality, union, assembly, perfection, completion, of a culmination, a whole, something vast and yet also precise, of light. We are made up of this element, it makes us feel alive, allows us to explore freely and motivates us to share it.

It’s a metaphor that we can apply to so many aspects of life, including the spirit of Rotondes. Carrying a seed in you, making it grow and leaving behind a trace for those who come after you. Highlighting and sharing creativity and imagination, opening doors that are sometimes unusual and unknown in the name of open-mindedness and exploration.”

Marie Lavis is a Luxembourg, Belgian and French artist born in 1996. After a foundation year at Atelier de Sèvres (Paris, FR), followed by a bachelor’s degree in visual communication at HEAD – Genève (CH), she started freelancing in the world of illustration, animation and graphics in 2018.

As she is particularly sensitive to music, her collaborations mostly revolve around this medium, or draw inspiration from it. Marie explores black and white, lines and shapes, music, feelings, movement, life and its complexities, immensity, symbols and patterns.

Her latest collaborations include: Shai Maestro, Jon Batiste, Metropole Orkest, Jacob Collier, l’École de Jazz de Genève, Universal, Pause Puzzle and Ronnie Scott’s. She featured in the TOPAFF Konbini 100 best posters list, won the poster competition held by Montreux Jazz Festival in 2020, and the Elephant Parade design competition in Luxembourg in 2021. Her animated films have been included in many official selections at festivals, including Animatou, LIAF and Anima Brussels.
